The next stage is to write out the obstacles in the characters way. This is by no means an exhaustive list, since I haven't thought of everything yet. But it will get me to the next stage of the outline procedure. I'm hoping that by the end of the outline the story is much more fleshed out than it is right now.
Obstacles:
Self: He wants to believe he has value as a human being, but he has always thought of his value in terms of what he could do, but now he needs other people to help him. He used to help others, but now he can't, or feels that he can't.
Situation: He has no job. This means that he runs out of money rather quickly in this story.
Situation: He has a large obstacle to look like he once did, and that is that it is beyond modern medicine to regrow limbs. Plastic surgery might fix some of the scarring, but that is about it.
People: His girlfriend is more shallow than he realizes, although perhaps in the course of this book he will become aware of it. So he really doesn't have much chance of getting back with her. Even if she tries to give him a chance, she wouldn't be able to get over it.
